WHAT WE DO

Calypso programs, without the machine time

THE ZEISS STORY

From a Jena workshop to Calypso

Carl Zeiss opened a workshop in Jena in 1846 to build precision mechanical and optical instruments for the local university. Measuring instruments followed, and in 1973 Zeiss launched the UMM 500, its first CNC coordinate measuring machine.

Calypso is Zeiss's measurement software for its CMMs. Programs can be built graphically on the CAD model, and an offline option lets a complete CNC measurement plan be created on a separate workstation, which is exactly how we write them: on a dedicated offline seat, while your machine keeps working.

Thirty years of metrology go into every program, whatever software it runs in.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does Calypso offline programming cost?
Calypso offline programming is quoted from the published rates of $125 per hour, with a daily rate for larger program libraries, and because the work is done offline, no travel time or travel expenses ever reach the invoice, which usually makes it the lowest-cost way to get a new part programmed on a Zeiss CMM. Full details are on the pricing page.
Why program a Zeiss CMM offline?
Programming a Zeiss CMM offline keeps the machine measuring production while the Calypso program is written from the CAD model and the print, so new part numbers, engineering changes and new machines all get their programs without losing a shift of machine time to programming. The machine's hours stay on parts.
Can a Calypso program be written without the part or the machine?
A Calypso program can be written without the part on the table or any time on the machine, because it is built from the CAD model and the print along with your machine, probe and stylus configuration and a description of the fixturing, so the program is written and waiting when the parts and the machine are.
Can existing Calypso programs be updated offline for an engineering change?
Existing Calypso programs can be updated offline for an engineering change, a new tolerance, or a revised fixture, with the edits made to the program you already run rather than a rewrite, so the update is waiting when you need it and your Zeiss never comes off production for programming time.
What do you need to quote a Calypso program?
Quoting a Calypso program starts with a conversation about the part and the deadline, and the CAD model, the print, the Zeiss machine model, your Calypso version and the probe configuration fill in the rest whenever you happen to have them handy. Nothing has to be ready before the first email.

Which Zeiss it runs on, which version of Calypso, and what the part is are plenty to start the conversation. When a quote is the next step, a follow-up comes back with timing at the published rates.
